The Harvard Lampoon poked fun at its campus rival by spoofing an issue of the campus newspaper The Harvard Crimson. Included in the practical joke was a full page ad for the RealTouch interactive sex device for men, which saw an immediate increase in sales in the Boston area.
It is the second year in a row that The Lampoon has carried an ad for RealTouch, the sophisticated device from leading adult video on demand (VOD) company AEBN. RealTouch uses proprietary haptic technology to simulate the authentic warmth, moistness and relative motion of a performer when watching an adult video.
This year the ad was created entirely by Harvard students at The Lampoon. Its headline proclaimed: “This Edition of The Harvard Crimson is Brought to You by RealTouch.” The ad copy includes funny customer reviews, cartoons, a “For the Ladies” section, and a “product overview” that reads: “The Crimson believes in the 4 W’s of sex: 1.Wet; 2. Warm; 3. Wild; 4. With a different girl every night. If you agree, read on.”
“The Lampoon invited us to be the first ad to ever appear in their traditional spoof of the newspaper. We elected to let The Lampoon’s staff create the ad itself, since they know their audience better than anyone,” says Scott Rinaldo, sales director of RealTouch.
Rinaldo added, “Sales in the Boston area have shot up since the ad appeared, just as they did last year when the Lampoon ran our first ad. This just shows that Harvard guys are smart enough to know the real thing even when it is in a tongue and cheek ad. Of course, our favorite line in the ad was that ‘The RealTouch is the Rolls Royce of sex toys.’”
