Doctor asks Congress to give America a Happy Ending

Tuesday July 6th, 2010
Here’s a shout-out to Dr. Jenni Skyler in beautiful Boulder, Colorado for her article in the Boulder Weekly suggesting that Congress add orgasm to health care reform, positing that orgasm has demonstrated physical and mental health benefits. And it has to be better than going macrobiotic. WTF is macrobiotic anyway?

Excerpted from her column, Dr. Skyler, Ph.D., MSEd, a sex therapist and board-certified sexologist, wrote, “As Washington argues about our health care system, we citizens of Boulder can claim bragging rights for being one of the most happy and healthy cities in the nation. We have it covered when it comes to diet, exercise, mountains and meditation. However, we may have to periodically remind ourselves that high quality health also includes sexual health.”

“What would our country look like if health care reform included affordable services for all people to be orgasmic? From a public health approach, we’d emphasize primary prevention of illness using orgasm as preventive medicine. This does not mean more hand-jobs on street corners.” (Note to self, see if hand jobs on the corner are in the Boulder vacation guide.) “Rather, this entails sophisticated sexuality education about healthy and pleasurable sexual relationships with yourself and others. Then, perhaps, you can better your hand-jobs at home.”

Here’s the good doctor’s rationale.

“Because orgasm has several evidence based health benefits, we would also save money in health care tax dollars. Endorphins released with orgasm relieve tension and stress, and help manage pain and headaches.

“Orgasmic muscle tension also burns calories — not as much as a stationary bicycle class, but certainly more comfortable for your genitals. Post-orgasm relaxation supports better sleeping and helps curb cravings for junk food and cigarettes.”

Dr. Skyler believes it is feasible to heal our nation with orgasm. And she says Boulder can lead the way, noting that the Colorado town has the most alternative health practitioners and therapists per square mile. She quotes another Boulder based sex therapist Deb Rubin who calls orgasm “the balance between complete surrender to sensual stimulation and compete permission of pleasure.”

At RealTouch, we’re all about permission to have pleasure so thank you Dr. Skyler and Ms. Rubin. When it’s covered by your health insurance, we’ll let you know.
